Education Scholarship Program
THE NEED

Educational inequality remains a major barrier in the realization of people’s potential within the country. A good education is critical to improving income, employment and enterprise opportunities.

Despite the fact that primary school education is compulsory and free with secondary Education being further subsided, children from disadvantaged backgrounds continue to miss school due to financial or academic problems. The transition from primary school to secondary school is difficult for many with a marked overall dropout of about 40%.

Kenya has made progress over the past few decades in making higher education more accessible. However, disparities persist in student access to colleges and universities. These disparities limit work and life opportunities for needy students.

"A good education is critical to improving income, employment and enterprise opportunities. Lack of a good educational foundation leads to disparities which limit work and life opportunities for needy students."

OUR IMPACT

Launched in the year 2007, Co-operative Bank Foundation has supported over 10,000 students to date. Every year, the foundation offers 655 scholarships to students who have completed their primary school education but are unable to proceed to secondary school due to financial constraints. From the 655 slots, 420 are awarded to the Bank’s Regional Delegates Forums as the representatives of the Sacco’s and Co-operatives. The remaining 235 are nominated by the 47 County Governments with each county receiving 5 slots. The students are free to attend the school of their choosing. The results is an expansive scholarship program with scholars from all parts of Kenya. The Scholarship provided is comprehensive, catering for tuition, school uniform, books.

After completion of their KSCE, all scholars are invited for an online Career Guidance and Entrepreneurship Program called Jijali. This program was launched in 2018 in partnership with Yusudi Limited to provide the beneficiaries with life-skills, addresssing in particular soft skills, alternative sources of income and practical skills. Each beneficiary is paired with a mentor who provides a personal perspective and shows real-life application.

The Foundation offers 56 university scholarships to their top performing students every year. The program not only covers the cost of tuition and accommodation, but also offers the students an opportunity to intern at the Bank. The students must also complete community service to learn the importance of giving back. The exposure from these experiences help the students grow holistically.
