Youth and Women Empowerment

Youth and Women Empowerment

Youth and women in Kenya constitute a significant portion of the population yet face persistent inequalities, economic vulnerabilities, and limited access to resources, restricting their capacity to participate fully in socio-economic development.

Unemployment disproportionately affects young people, with approximately 800,000 entering the labour market annually amid limited opportunities. Women face additional barriers, such as restricted access to finance, limited property rights, and inadequate representation in leadership and decision-making processes.

To effectively address these challenges, we prioritise programmes that increase economic opportunities, enhance financial literacy, and equip women and youth with essential entrepreneurial and employment skills. By supporting economic empowerment initiatives, we contribute to reducing poverty, addressing gender disparities, and fostering sustainable economic development.

Goal

Increase access to quality education and reduce financial burdens for economically disadvantaged families.

Objectives

  • Promote financial literacy and capability among youth and women.
  • Strengthen operational and financial capacities of youth and women-led groups.
  • Expand access to entrepreneurial training and skill development.
  • Offer career preparation, mentoring, and soft skills training for improved employability.

Impact Highlights

In the past few years, we have run several initiatives under this pillar. Jijali is a three month online youth empowerment program implemented in partnership with Yusudi Ltd. The trainees choose between two tracks, entrepreneurship and career preparation.

They each receive weekly mentorship from an experienced mentor to support their learning journey and motivate them to achieve their personal. As of 2025, over 1300 young people have benefited from this program, many of them going on to either secure employment or start their own businesses.

The Jenga Rider program was designed to improve the lives of boda boda riders in Kenya by supporting access to driving licenses, strengthening financial and digital literacy, and enhancing entrepreneurial skills. Dedicated sessions were also held for female riders to address their specific needs. In total, 3,500 riders took part in the program.

Building on this success, we developed the Jenga Rider mobile application to reach even more riders. The app is aimed at increasing income generation and promoting financial wellbeing.

Under this pillar, we have also sponsored 100 female micro-entrepreneurs to attend a capacity-building training aimed at strengthening their ability to generate higher income. They had access to the best resources while attending Strathmore Business School.
